Background of the Study
School libraries serve as critical hubs for learning, providing access to a wide range of resources that support academic achievement, especially in STEM education. In Gombe LGA, Gombe State, the role of school libraries extends beyond book lending; they are instrumental in offering digital resources, scientific journals, and reference materials that help students grasp complex STEM concepts. Libraries that are well-resourced foster an environment where students can engage in independent research, collaborative projects, and self-directed learning. Recent advancements in digital technology have enabled school libraries to incorporate online databases and e-resources, further enhancing their support for STEM curricula (Ibrahim, 2023). However, challenges such as limited funding, outdated collections, and inadequate space often impede the effectiveness of school libraries in many parts of Gombe LGA (Adamu, 2024). Moreover, the integration of library resources with classroom teaching remains inconsistent, resulting in missed opportunities for reinforcing STEM learning. Effective school libraries not only contribute to improved academic performance but also cultivate a culture of lifelong learning and critical inquiry among students. This study seeks to investigate the role of school libraries in supporting STEM education by evaluating their resource availability, utilization, and impact on student learning outcomes. The research will explore how libraries can serve as complementary educational environments that bridge the gap between theoretical classroom instruction and practical, research-based learning experiences. By assessing the current state of school libraries in Gombe LGA and identifying best practices, this study aims to provide recommendations for enhancing their role in STEM education. The ultimate goal is to ensure that every student has equitable access to quality library resources, which is essential for fostering academic excellence and innovation in STEM fields (Adamu, 2024; Musa, 2025).

Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Despite the recognized importance of school libraries, many institutions in Gombe LGA face significant challenges in utilizing these resources effectively to support STEM education. Numerous schools report inadequate funding for library collections, resulting in outdated or insufficient materials that fail to meet the academic needs of STEM students. This scarcity is further compounded by limited access to digital resources and online scientific databases, which are crucial for contemporary STEM learning (Ibrahim, 2023). Additionally, there is often a disconnect between the library services and classroom teaching, with librarians and teachers rarely collaborating to integrate library resources into the STEM curriculum. Consequently, students are deprived of valuable opportunities for independent research, critical inquiry, and exposure to current scientific literature. This situation adversely affects academic performance and diminishes student interest in STEM fields. The absence of a structured approach to library resource management and utilization in many schools also means that available materials are not optimally used. Furthermore, infrastructural issues such as inadequate library space and poor maintenance further exacerbate these challenges. This study intends to systematically examine the role of school libraries in supporting STEM education in Gombe LGA, focusing on resource availability, integration with classroom instruction, and the overall impact on student learning outcomes. By identifying the gaps and challenges, the research aims to propose actionable recommendations to enhance library services, ensuring that they effectively contribute to STEM education and foster a more enriching academic environment (Adamu, 2024; Musa, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the availability and quality of library resources in schools within Gombe LGA.

  • To evaluate how library resources are integrated into STEM education.

  • To recommend strategies for optimizing the role of school libraries in supporting STEM learning.

Research Questions

  • How adequate are the library resources available to support STEM education in Gombe LGA?

  • In what ways are school libraries integrated with STEM classroom instruction?

  • What measures can enhance the effectiveness of school libraries in supporting STEM education?

Research Hypotheses

  • H₁: Schools with well-resourced libraries exhibit higher student performance in STEM subjects.

  • H₂: Effective integration of library resources with classroom instruction improves STEM learning outcomes.

  • H₃: Enhanced digital access in libraries is positively correlated with increased student research engagement.

Significance of the Study (100 words)
This study is significant as it explores the pivotal role of school libraries in supporting STEM education in Gombe LGA. The findings will inform educators and policymakers on the critical need to invest in library resources and integrate them effectively with STEM curricula. By identifying challenges and proposing targeted strategies, the research aims to enhance the quality of library services, thereby improving academic performance and fostering a culture of inquiry among STEM students. Ultimately, this study will contribute to the development of a more resourceful and supportive learning environment.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to investigating the role and effectiveness of school libraries in supporting STEM education in selected schools within Gombe LGA, Gombe State. It focuses solely on library resources and their integration with academic instruction.
